I'm a senior music education major at West Texas A&M university. I currently teach privately in the canyon and Amarillo area. I also hold a position with the Amarillo Symphony orchestra.
When I'm not playing horn or going to class I love to go hiking, mountian bike riding, repelling and snowboarding.
1. Music is enriching for all humans both academically and culturally. But more important than that: it's just plain fun. My first job as a music educator should be to never get in the way of the natural enjoyment students can and will find in performing music.
2. All people generally enjoy those activities that they are successful at. If you want kids to love band, you've got to do everything in your power to make them successful.
3. The goal of all educators, not just musicians should be to make yourself obsolete. The point is to teach so thoroughly and effectively that the student no longer needs you.
4. Music is the ultimate equalizer. All people form all societies, all generations and all cultures have had music as an integral part of their experience. From the 18th century dance, to east Indian gamelans, to salsa, rock and roll and now hip-hop music knows no boundaries and is a perfect conduit for human interaction in an ever shrinking world culture.
I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places. Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality. ~H.A. Overstreet
